EIDO is delighted to announce that its informed consent patient information library has been fully endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons. The following is a statement from the College:

The Royal College of Surgeons has teamed up with EIDO Healthcare to promote patient consent and communication through the endorsement of the EIDO library of 300 detailed surgical information leaflets.

The leaflets, which are used by around 40% of NHS hospitals, are designed to be used alongside a consultation to help patients consider the risks, benefits and alternatives to procedures in order to make informed decisions about their treatment. They can also be taken away and re‐read before an operation, helping to target conversation about concerns and subsequently shortening consultation times and reducing calls to the hospital.

As part of the partnership, EIDO will provide the RCS with a package of summary content covering 175 operations, specifically designed for the College’s website and accessible to Members.

Professor Norman Williams, President of the Royal College of Surgeons, said: “Most surgeons and hospitals provide patients with leaflets to explain what treatment is proposed, but evidence and guidelines can change frequently. By taking away the worry of maintaining revisions and providing a consistent and clear writing style the EIDO leaflets save time, reduce medico‐legal risks and ensure that patients are aware of the risks and benefits of surgery. It is for these reasons we are happy to endorse EIDO’s library and provide access to summary versions on the RCS website as a membership benefit.”

Owain Tudor, Head of Product Development at EIDO, said “One of EIDO’s key objectives has always been to promote the use of good quality, clear patient information to support informed consent ‐ for the benefit of patients and surgeons. This endorsement shows the College’s willingness to work with EIDO to reduce medico‐legal risk and improve patient safety.”

“Timely, high quality patient information is fundamental to the quality and safety of modern surgery. Alerting patients and their carers to key warning signs can also facilitate the early detection of unanticipated complications and is crucial to ensuring safety once the patient has left hospital.

Advances in surgical and anaesthetic techniques, combined with increasing recognition of the hazards associated with excessive hospital dependency, have resulted in the vast expansion of day surgery and the development of enhanced recovery programmes for inpatient surgery. Such short stay surgery is high quality care with considerable clinical benefits for the patient, but also financial advantages for the hospital, and appropriate patient information is crucial to its safety and success.

The British Association of Day Surgery is delighted to endorse the EIDO library of information leaflets embracing short stay surgical principles. We believe that these will have an integral role in preparing patients for a rapid recovery with the shortest necessary hospital stay and an optimal perioperative experience.”

Ian Smith, President, British Association of Day Surgery

With around 25,000 people dying every year as a result of a blood clot, reducing the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) has become a major national priority for the NHS.

From 1st June, no less than 90% of hospital patients will be required to be risk-assessed. Patients have to be given written information about:

why they are being assessed;

the risk factors that contribute to VTE;

the treatments available to reduce the risk of VTE (with relevant complications);

the importance of following the recommended treatment; and

the signs that indicate VTE

In response to these requirements, EIDO has developed a VTE patient information leaflet to be given to patients as part of their VTE risk assessment. Developed in conjunction with EIDO’s clinical authoring team and the Plain English Campaign, this important new leaflet has only strengthened EIDO’s reputation as the UK de-facto standard for quality patient information.

If you would like to know more, please call 0115 878 1000, or email vte@eidohealthcare.com.

EIDO Healthcare enjoyed another outstanding exhibition at ASGBI 2010, with many member surgeons taking up the offer of personalised EIDO leaflets for use in their private practices. Significant interest came not only from UK surgeons, but also as far overseas as India, France and Kuwait.
The main star of the exhibition, however, was EIDO’s giant Operation game, which proved a hit with both consultants and trainees alike. After three days of frenzied competition, trainee Caroline Bagley was crowned ‘the fastest surgeon in the West’, and will shortly receive a Nintendo Wii and Wii-Fit.
