With around 25,000 people dying every year as a result of a blood clot, reducing the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) has become a major national priority for the NHS.
From 1st June, no less than 90% of hospital patients will be required to be risk-assessed and all Acute Trusts must have the necessary processes in place to report on and monitor these assessments. Patients have to be given written information about:
- why they are being assessed;
- the risk factors that contribute to VTE;
- the treatments available to reduce the risk of VTE (with relevant complications);
- the importance of following the recommended treatment; and
- the signs that indicate VTE
In addition to this, from 2011/12, PCTs will be given the power to withdraw a proportion of contract payments if providers fail to meet an agreed level of patient satisfaction.
In response to these requirements, EIDO has developed a VTE patient information leaflet to be given to patients as part of their VTE risk assessment. Developed in conjunction with EIDO’s clinical authoring team and the Plain English Campaign, this important new leaflet has only strengthened EIDO’s reputation as the UK de-facto standard for quality patient information.
