Steve is a medical educator who became associated with EIDO Australia nearly twenty years ago while Editor in Chief of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ journal, Australian Family Physician.

As a general practitioner with a background in the healthcare of people with intellectual disabilities and working in remote Indigenous communities, he is committed to improving health literacy and shared decision making in medical practice. Steve is currently Professor and Head of Medical Education at the University of Melbourne, having previously been National Director of GP Training and before that a senior lecturer at Monash University.

As Chair of EIDO’s International Editorial Board, Steve’s responsibilities include ensuring the resources that support patient-doctor communication are evidence-based, accessible and accurate within the local context.

Dr Elizabeth Pemberton is Deputy Director of the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. She is a senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne, holds a Masters in Public Health in Health Services Management and has a special interest in neuroanaesthesia.

Julian Smith is Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery (School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health) at Monash University and Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Monash Health (Monash Medical Centre), Melbourne, Australia. He is a previous Councillor of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, a past-President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons and a past-President and Governor of the Australian and New Zealand Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

His main clinical and research interests are in less invasive surgery, surgical clinical trials/audit/databases, the use of evidence-based medicine by surgeons and surgical education from which over 425 publications have arisen. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the ANZ Journal of Surgery.

Associate Prof David Prior

Associate Professor David Prior is Deputy Director of Cardiology and Director of Non-invasive Cardiac Imaging at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. He completed a PhD in heart failure at the Baker Heart Research Institute and subsequently an imaging fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, USA. He has worked at St Vincent’s Hospital since 2000 and more recently at Albury Wodonga Health. He also holds a position as Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne.

David’s major clinical and research interests are in heart failure management, echocardiography, cardiac MRI, sports cardiology and pulmonary hypertension. He has published over 170 scientific papers and is a fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia & New Zealand, the American College of Cardiology and the American Society of Echocardiography.

Matthew Campbell is an ENT head and neck surgeon and has been the Director of the ENT Head and Neck Surgery Unit at Austin Health since 2000.

He studied Medicine at the University of Melbourne and the Austin Hospital Clinical School. As a recipient of the Hugh Noel Puckle Scholarship he had post Fellowship positions at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, Julius-Maximilians University in Würzburg, Germany studying middle ear surgery, Lyon, France studying phoniatric surgery and with the Royal College of Surgeons (Ireland), Dublin in head and neck cancer surgery.

He is interested in many different aspects of otolaryngology including head and neck and airway surgery. He has been involved in several international research studies involving implantable hypoglossal nerve stimulating devices to treat obstructive sleep apnoea.

Dr Roger Berry

Dr Roger Berry is a hepaticopancreaticobiliary (HPB) and hernia surgeon. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and member of the ANZHPBA & International HPB associations.

His practice is limited to all aspects of liver, pancreas and biliary surgery. He performs hernia operations using open, laparoscopic and robotic techniques.

Roger completed his General Surgical training and went on to become the first Australasian Fellow in Transplant Surgery; specialising in liver transplantation.

He is an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in General Surgery. He is a senior member of the HPB Unit at one of Melbourne’s major teaching hospitals and supervises the ANZHPBA Fellows that train in the unit.

He is a keen cyclist, novice trumpeter, proud father of three children and dotting grandparent to Hazel.

Dr Andy Woods is Medical Lead in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, NSW. He is also Maternity Stream Lead for the Women’s Health and Maternity Network in Hunter New England and the District Lead for Obstetrics and Gynaecology for Southern New South Wales Local Health Districts. Andy is a Subject Matter Expert for the NSW Perinatal Safety Programme and is a member of the NSW Maternity Safety Intelligence Register Clinical Advisory Group.

Andy’s main clinical interest is in High Risk Obstetric Care. He is heavily involved in Clinical Governance with a particular interest in the various patient safety and quality processes that are part of effective clinical governance systems. His main research interest is in Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders in Pregnancy.

Peter is currently Head of Breast Cancer Services at Cabrini Medical Centre, Melbourne, Victoria. He has previously held appointments at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Monash Medical Centre.

Peter is a surgeon with over 30 years’ experience caring for women with Breast Cancer at all levels including research, teaching and multidisciplinary care.

Dr Justin Sherwin is a Melbourne-based ophthalmologist with special interests in cataract and refractive surgery and glaucoma management.

Prior to graduating Monash University Medical School, Dr Sherwin completed an intercalated year at the Centre for Eye Research Australia investigating ocular genetics. Following work at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, he undertook additional postgraduate study in epidemiology and eye research at the University of Cambridge, UK (including a PhD). His main research interests were assessing the relationship between UV light, time outdoors and eye diseases, and the epidemiology of cataract and refractive error.

His ophthalmology training was based at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH), Melbourne. Sub-speciality fellowship training in cataract and glaucoma surgery was undertaken at Oxford Eye Hospital, UK. He has been awarded numerous prestigious awards, scholarships and research grants and written over 50 publications.

Dr Sherwin works privately at Bayside Eye Specialists (Brighton), Vista Eye Specialists (Elsternwick), Peninsula Eye Centre (Mornington) and Vision Eye Institute (Footscray). In addition, he holds a public appointment at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH).

Susan Carden is an Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Melbourne. She is an ophthalmologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne. Her doctorate, titled ‘Retinopathy of prematurity in a transitional economy: comparisons and contrasts with developed countries’, examined the development and management of a screening program for ROP in Hanoi, Vietnam, and documented its high prevalence even in near term babies exposed to unregulated oxygen therapy. Building on experience from Vietnam, A/Prof Carden has advised UNICEF in efforts to establish an ROP screening Papua New Guinea. She has contributed to international ophthalmology textbook chapters and was a clinical investigator for the oxygen safety trial in preterm babies – the STOP-ROP study. As head of the Education and Vision Assessment Clinic at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, she works in a team to ensure that children with low vision have access to the curriculum at their school.

Tim trained in oral & maxillofacial surgery and completed his MDSc at the University of Melbourne in 1995 as well as his FRACDS (OMS). He took up a post in New Orleans as a Fellow in oral & maxillofacial surgery at the Louisiana State University and following this, returned to Melbourne to commence private practice. He has also completed an MBA at Swinburne in 2009.

He has previously held consultant positions at the Royal Children’s Hospital and The Royal Melbourne Hospital, has been a councillor on ANZAOMS Federal body and past president of ANZAOMS Victorian Branch. He is currently an Honorary Senior Fellow, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne and remains on 2 committees of the ADA Victorian Branch.

Tim’s interests include adult and paediatric OMS including cleft lip and palate deformity, dentoalveolar surgery, corrective jaw surgery, bone grafting and implantology for the replacement of missing teeth.

Dr Stephen Megson is an Orthopaedic Surgeon on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. After specialist training in Perth, Stephen initially started practice in rural Queensland as a generalist orthopaedic surgeon in 1999, but since relocating to the Sunshine Coast in 2012 has a practice restricted to Upper Limb Surgery.

Stephen is a Fellow of RACS, a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and a member of the Queensland Hand Surgery Society. He is a strong advocate for all aspects of surgical safety, including informed consent.

Professor Spencer Beasley ONZM is a paediatric surgeon and paediatric urologist who is the Clinical Director of the Department of Paediatric Surgery, Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand and Professor of Paediatric Surgery, Christchurch School of Medicine at the University of Otago. He and his department provide a regional paediatric surgical outreach service to the whole of the South Island.

Spencer is the Surgical Advisor to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for Aotearoa New Zealand. He is a former Vice-President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and as Chair of its Governance and Advocacy Committee was responsible for the implementation of the Expert Advisory Group recommendations around Discrimination, Bullying and Sexual Harassment (DBSH). He has been on the faculty of the RACS Foundation Surgical Skills course and was previously the Chair of Professional Development. He is a former Chair of the Board in Paediatric Surgery and senior examiner in paediatric surgery, and subsequently became Chair of the Court of Examiners. He was instrumental in the development of the new RACS “Leadership for surgeons in everyday practice” course. He is President of the Aotearoa New Zealand Society of Paediatric Surgeons, former President of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Paediatric Surgeons, and Chair of the RACS Board of Surgical Education and Training. He has contributed to the RACS-administered Pacific Island Project, mostly to Vanuatu, for over a decade. He has written 10 textbooks on paediatric surgery, over 350 peer reviewed papers and has nine lovely children!

Richard McMullin is a general urologist based in the regional Victorian city of Ballarat. His practice spans benign and malignant adult and paediatric urology.

Richard has an interest in medical education and training, with longstanding participation in RACS surgical skill training and examining for the FRACS.

Dr Roger Bell is a consultant vascular and transplantation surgeon with over 30-years’ experience.

He is the current Head of Transplantation Surgery at Monash Medical Centre and his private practice is North Western Vascular in Moonee Ponds.

Roger treats the entire range of vascular conditions (arterial and venous) with open and endovascular techniques and has a special interest in treating patients with hyperhidrosis and facial blushing.
