Our 10-Step Document Process

Our contributors are responsible for developing, testing and approving our informed consent patient information.

They ensure content conforms to the NHS England Information Standard and is:

  • Clear
  • Evidence based
  • Up to date
  • Easy to use

The contributors write, review and approve new treatment-specific informed consent patient information documents,  maintaining the standard expected from EIDO.

Stephen is a consultant trauma, orthopaedic foot  and ankle surgeon at Royal Derby Hospital.

After completing his medical degree in Sheffield with Honours, Stephen did his basic surgical training in Nottingham and Derby, passing the FRCS exam in 1995.  He trained in the mid Trent region and qualified as a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon in 2002.

Stephen developed his special interest in foot & ankle surgery at Dunedin Public Hospital in New Zealand.  In his consultant position at Royal Derby, his clinical interests include ankle replacement and treatment of complex fractures and injuries.

Stephen is on the East Midlands clinical advisory group for major trauma, and is a Speciality Advisor to NICE for foot & ankle surgery.  He has published many research papers and is a Reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

David Baldwin

David is a consultant physician in respiratory medicine at Nottingham University Hospitals.

After graduating from the University of Birmingham in 1984, he trained in the Midlands and in New Zealand, becoming accredited in respiratory medicine in 1996.

David’s main clinical interests are in lung cancer, pleural disease and interventional bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy. He is involved in a number of important national projects including the UK Lung Cancer Screening Study, and is Chair of the Clinical Reference Group for Lung Cancer for NHS England.

David is an Honorary Professor of the School of Medicine at Nottingham University, and is a Fellow of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

Prof Ian Beckingham

Ian is a consultant hepatobiliary and laparoscopic surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals.

After graduating from Nottingham University in 1987, he trained in Newcastle, Leeds and Cape Town.  While in Cape Town, he won the JH Louw medal for best surgical trainee.

Ian has pioneered the use of minimally-invasive techniques both in liver and pancreatic resections, and through his work in single incision gallbladder removals. He has extensive research interests in liver and pancreatic cancer, laparoscopic surgery and hernia surgery.

Ian is President of the Association of Upper GI Surgeons and is an advanced laparoscopic instructor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England.  He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, written numerous books and book chapters, and is an invited speaker at international surgical meetings.

Julia is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Derby Hospital and Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham.

After graduating with honours from Nottingham University in 1993, she trained in the East Midlands, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2009.

Julia is clinical lead for the Royal Derby Hospital cardiac CT service carrying out many coronary angiogram and angioplasty procedures.  She has clinical and research interests in adult cardiology, coronary intervention (particularly Reopro-eluting stents) and valvular heart disease.  Julia has published many peer-reviewed papers and has presented abstracts at a number of international meetings.

Julia is the Cardiology clinical lead for medical students at Nottingham and Derby and co-ordinates the Clinical Phase 1 and 3 cardiology programmes.

Bruce is a consultant vascular surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals.

After graduating from Cambridge University in 1989, he trained in London, Oxford and New York.

Bruce’s main clinical interest is in varicose veins, conducting research into varicose vein treatments and pioneering the use of keyhole techniques.

Bruce is a Council Member of the Venous Forum of the Royal Society of Medicine, Founder Member of the International Society for Vascular Surgery and Council member of the Vascular Surgical Society of Great Britain.  He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and is a reviewer for The Lancet and the British Journal of Surgery.

Bruce is an Honorary Associate Professor in Cardiovascular Medicine at Nottingham University.

Andrew is a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals.

After qualifying in dentistry from Bristol University in 1986 he went on to train as a dental surgeon and then qualified as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in 2001, having passed the FRCS exit exams with a Gold medal.

Andrew is a world expert in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery.  He has been an invited speaker at over 70 international scientific meetings and is a Founder Member and Past President of the European Society for TMJ surgery.

Andrew is the Associate Editor in TMJ surgery for the British Journal of Surgery.  He has written numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed papers, and is a lead author of the UK National Guidelines for TMJ replacement.

Rik is a consultant anaesthetist at Nottingham University Hospitals.

After graduating from Birmingham Medical School in 2003, he trained mainly in the East Midlands with a period of advanced training at Royal Perth Hospital, Western Australia.

Rik’s specialist interests include acute pain, thoracics and regional anaesthesia.

Rik is committed to teaching and training of doctors.  He was appointed by the University of Nottingham as Quality Lead for the East Midlands region.

Shailinder is a consultant paediatric surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals and Head of the Bastow Laboratory.

Shailinder completed his initial surgical training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research in Chandigarh, India and qualified as a paediatric surgeon in 1993 gaining first place in the Intercollegiate Board of Paediatric Surgery Exam.  He has also worked and carried out research at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney.

Shailinder’s research interests include lower gastro-intestinal problems.  In his role as Head of the Bastow Laboratory, he leads research in Paediatric Clinical Gastro-intestinal Physiology.  Shailinder has wide-ranging clinical interests including neonatal surgery, gastro-intestinal surgery, trauma management and laparoscopy.

Shailinder is a reviewer for the Journal of Paediatric Surgery and speaks at many international conferences.

Richard is a consultant neurosurgeon at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham and a neurological advisor to the Royal Navy.

After graduating from St Thomas’ Medical School in 1984, he trained in a number of UK centres and spent a year as a neurosurgery clinical fellow at St Austin’s Hospital in Melbourne.

As well as running a general adult neurosurgical practice, Richard has extensive specialist interest in hydrocephalus and cervical arthroplasty.  He runs cervical arthroplasty courses in the UK and in France.

Richard is a trainer for the Royal College of Surgeons of England’s Neurosurgical Skills Courses and is an intercollegiate examiner for FRCS Neurosurgery. He has published may peer-reviewed publications, lectures at international meetings and has invented neurosurgical instruments.
